Where is Downing Centre Local Court?

Downing Centre Local Court (Criminal) is on Level 4 of the Downing Centre, 143–147 Liverpool Street, Sydney. The District Court criminal registry is on Level 3 of the same building. Civil Local Court lists for the Sydney CBD sit separately at John Maddison Tower, 86–90 Goulburn Street.

The Downing Centre is in the southern part of the CBD, close to Museum station and Hyde Park. Parking in the CBD is limited and expensive, so public transport is usually the best option.

The registry is open 9:00am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Court enquiries can be made to the NSW Courts Service Centre on 1300 679 272. Audio-visual link (AVL) facilities are available.

How the lists run at Downing Centre Local Court

Under the Local Court's 2026 sitting and listing arrangements, criminal lists generally start at 9:30am. There are crime lists across 14 courtrooms, including a charge list every day, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) lists on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Commonwealth matters on Tuesdays, and custody and bail lists. First-instance bail applications for people refused police bail are now generally heard by the Local Court's Bail Division by AVL. List days can change, so always check the date and time on your court attendance notice or bail acknowledgment, or ask us to check the online court list for you.

Domestic violence and AVO matters are listed on Wednesdays. If you have been served with an AVO application or charged with a domestic violence offence, get advice before your first mention so you know whether to consent without admissions, negotiate the conditions or defend the application.

What happens at your first appearance?

Most criminal cases start with a court attendance notice issued by police, which sets out the charge and the date, time and court you must attend. At the first appearance the court will usually ask how you plead. If you plead guilty, the matter may be finalised that day: the court hears the police facts and your criminal record, then submissions, and then sentences you. If you plead not guilty, the court will usually order the prosecution to serve the brief of evidence and adjourn the matter, and later list it for a defended hearing.

For more serious indictable offences, the case follows the early appropriate guilty plea process: the prosecution serves the brief, a charge certificate is filed, and there is a case conference between the prosecution and your lawyer before the matter is committed to the District Court for sentence or trial. Early advice matters, because a guilty plea entered in the Local Court attracts the largest sentencing discount.

Do not miss a court date. If you are on bail, failing to appear may be an offence and a warrant may be issued for your arrest. Arrive early, allow time for security screening, and bring your court attendance notice, bail papers and any references or reports. Legal Aid NSW duty lawyers are available at local courts, but they cannot run a defended hearing for you on the day, so it is best to get advice well before your court date.
